It’s currently done in the form of a tag cloud, but I’m initially not a fan, now I can see it using real data - it doesn’t fit with the nice clean aesthetic . But it does give a good overview of what is currently happening in the Mixed Martial Arts landscape. Look for this to revert to a more twitter-like trends list in the near future.

New feature: load more

One of the niceties of porting the site to a new platform, was being able to do a little bit of refactoring. This has allowed me to sprinkle a little ajax magic on MMA-URLs to create new little ‘load more posts’ buttons at the bottom of every site. While this is a nice usability touch, it will also allow more flexibility in how the mobile site (which is disabled at the moment due to being shit and not used) will work and allow me to get back to implementing that.

So watch this space.

Server Port Complete

I’ve just finished porting the site to Django (from GAE, due to pricing that doesn’t really fit what MMA-URLs is), seems to have gone ok - but we’ll see come tomorrow night when there’s yet another UFC event (these usually see slight spikes). Cheers for your patience when everything inevitably goes to shit.

MMA-URLs - site update

I’ve been giving MMA-URLs a bit more of the TLC it truly deserves over the past couple of days, and this can be seen in two ways:

Popular and Latest stories now have a favicon next to them to give a general idea of where they’re from before you go clicking willy nilly

I’ve started on a feature I’ve been putting off for too long now, but forms a huge part of what I see the app becoming. This is namely tagging. It’s far from perfect at the mo, and only active on the very latest articles, but currently any new article that comes in gets scanned by super hi-tech robots that automatically give it a category.

Now this second one might not sound like much, and is very much in its early stages, however I’m hoping that it could turn MMA-URLs in to a hugely useful tool. You can see it in its current form by expanding an article under popular (because that’s where I forgot to take it out before I pushed the last changes live ;D), where you’ll see “posted in” followed by 1-5 tags. Clicking on a tag that is only one word (a bit of a nasty bug there!) should take you to a horrible, unformatted page returning all of the latest articles falling under that category. For instance, these are the most recent articles about Strikeforce.

If you ignore the nastiness of the execution (consider this a bit of an alpha preview, for the massive audience of 2 followers of this here blog), I hope you can see the potential utility of this: Fully categorised news, completely regardless of the source on any topic / organisation / fighter you want. What topics are trending right now / today / this week in the world of MMA? It turns this site from a mere nice-looking aggregator (if I do say so myself) into a very powerful tool, usable by hardcores and casuals alike.

It excites me, and was one of the main reasons I started building this thing in the first place.

Si

PS Hi to some of the renewed traffic that reddit’s been sending us, a bit of mod-begging goes a long way ;D and an audience sure kicks a coder’s arse into finally getting shit done.

Beautiful helicopter sweep -> armbar

Beautiful helicopter sweep -> armbar

Amazing Baroni post-fight interview.

Amazing Baroni post-fight interview.

Those of us watching UFC123 missed quite the awesome boxing KO...

Those of us watching UFC123 missed quite the awesome boxing KO from Sergio Martinez (KO happens at 10:40-ish, but it’s quite a fun fight up until then)

Awesome scrambling action from WEC 52
